as keepsakes

and I know
that one day your daughter
when
she reads your war diary
will wonder why
you’ve glued a lock
of cut black hair
to the corner of the page

that day
I’ll tell her
that her mother was a brave soldier
brave and blameless
and that, as is the custom in war,
she kept her spent shells
as keepsakes
